Understanding EBVs (Estimated Breeding Values)

Breedplan performance recording system provides an objective statistical analysis of animals reported as Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs). Using information provided from stud breeders, Breedplan provides a genetic evaluation summary for a range of production traits, such as animal growth, reproduction and carcase performance.

Breedplan EBVs are commonly used by studs to promote animals and this information can be useful to determine if animals are genetically superior. EBVs are a much better predictor of an animals' performance, since they take into account the individual animal measurements plus pedigree, as well as known relationships between traits. Attempting to assess an animals' genetics visually is highly influenced by environmental circumstances however comparing animals EBVs will consider many more traits (fertility, growth, carcase) that cannot be seen visually.
Greswick Angus uses a high proportion of imported US Angus and elite Australian Angus sires in artificial insemination programs. Using high accuracy animals provides an opportunity to make faster genetic gain and therefore faster improvements in Greswick Angus client herds. EBVs greatly assist in the genetic selection of new reference sires and the suitability of certain sires for different markets and client herds.
